Pinterest | Talking Pins

The Challenge:
Creative teams loved the beauty and simplicity of the Pinterest feed, but found it overly rigid and hard to break through when it came to brand advertising.

The Idea:
In effort to create more immersive and interactive experiences within the Pinterest feed, I hacked Video Pins by using stacked videos to create the illusion of two pieces of content interacting with each other. The first brand to collaborate with the format was FX for the launch of the series American Horror Story: Cult.

The Results:
The “hack” product, coined Talking Pins for the interaction between two pieces of content contained within one Pin, was a hit with creative teams across all industries, from Entertainment and Auto, to Retail, CPG and QSR.

My Role:
Invented the unofficial ad format, Talking Pins, a highly visual and expressive play space for creative exploration, inspiring countless iterations of the format across Pinterest’s advertising partners.

Initial Concept Pitch | FX’s American Horror Story Cult

Live Talking Pin

As users searched for baking recipes on Pinterest (e.g. “honey recipes”), the contextually aligned American Horror Story Talking Pin, depicting one character dripping honey into the mouth of another, was served against adjacent content.
